Good news from The Roses theatre
The Roses theatre in Tewkesbury will soon be screening selected films which offer an audio description facility. The purchase of the equipment has been made possible by a grant from the UK Film Council and generous match funding from Tewkesbury Borough Council.
Audio description works on the principle of a narrator telling a story - alongside additional descriptive commentary such as body language, expressions, movements and the setting of the film - allowing anyone with a visual impairment to experience the screening in more detail.
The Roses is now equipped with a system which delivers this service, on selected films, through a headset - provided, free of charge, from the theatre’s Box Office. Ten headsets are available from the theatre and will need to be requested in advance of the film screening. Audio description doesn’t affect the experience of any audience member not using a headset.
With the Roses being only one of only three cinemas in Gloucestershire offering this service and with around 3,000 Gloucestershire residents registered as having a visual impairment, Deborah Rees, Director of the theatre, is delighted with this new addition to the programme:
“We believe that the Roses should be accessible to everyone and offer enjoyment and entertainment to all. The audio description option enhances this and enables anyone with a visual impairment increased access to our film screenings” she commented.
Films in the new season which will be offering the audio description facility include ‘Bright Star’; ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’; ‘Glorious 39’; ‘Avatar’ and ‘Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Squequal’!

Staff from Tewkesbury based Solicitors' firm, Thomson and Bancks, swapped their usual Sunday morning lie in for their running shoes when 8 of them entered the Race for Life in aid of Cancer Research on 5/7/09. The firm paid for the women to enter the race and provided t-shirts, and the rest of the staff (who prefer to stay in bed on a Sunday morning) generously sponsored the girls who completed a 5 km course.
